- Paul Celan
The silence of the dead merges with our own. The names of the dead baptize our young. Mirrors made of silence reflect the past. Pieces of night fall through the centuries, slowly like ash falls.
Our dead depart in ash. Ash spreads in the air. The air spreads in our lungs.
This side of the river we only wait.

The Many Names of Night

Buried in the sand of time, speech is the speechless witness of all pyramids.
I name the end, I name the night in all tongues.
I name the night its many names: come and steal the sky and swathe the earth.
The wanderer spheres map the sky, their lights trace the steps of time; men have built and created in an age what one night can obliterate.

"…they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth." - Hebrews 11:13
"Till finally you hear how words are coming to an end…" - Samuel Beckett
I rot, as alone my father before me and alone my son after me. Buried alive in the desert sandglass, there is nothing left for the body but begging for silence—as a way to repel silence. The word silence.
The word silence.
Pulse of hearts is dead in echo. Now the worm feasts among corpses. We were but strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
